20 Amazing Thrillers Streaming On Netflix

04 January 2014 | Features, Film Lists | by David Zou

great thriller movies

Thriller movies are rooted within the ordinary world, into which are brought those transforming elements (a murder, a monster, a vital secret) that charge it with a spirit of danger and adventure. Rather than transporting us to an exotic other world, the thriller creates a double world, one that is both exotic and everyday, primitive and modern, marvelous and mundane.

A good story lies at the heart of a fine thriller. Since it is not easy to find many good stories from Hollywood nowadays, we need a little help from Netflix and a guiding list like this one. We have selected 20 fantastic thrillers from the Netflix catalogue for fans who love suspenseful and thrilling movies.

1. Zodiac (Watch Now)

The Plot: A San Francisco cartoonist becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac killer.

Why See It: Instead of caring about the real serial killer like other thriller directors would do, director David Fincher is more interested in cartoonist’s obsession with the case, and turned it into a thrilling watching experience.

2. The Untouchables (Watch Now)

The Plot: Federal Agent Eliot Ness sets out to stop Al Capone; because of rampant corruption, he assembles a small, hand-picked team.

Why See It: Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia and Robert De Niro. Directed by Brian De Palma.

3.  The Swimming Pool (Watch Now)

The Plot: A British mystery author visits her publisher’s home in the South of France, where her interaction with his unusual daughter sets off some touchy dynamics.

Why See It: Erotic thrillers is a genre that, if not handled carefully, can quickly fall prey to silliness and excess. Director François Ozon apparently pulled it off and made a masterpiece.

4. The Conversation (Watch Now)

The Plot: A paranoid, secretive surveillance expert has a crisis of conscience when he suspects that a couple he is spying on will be murdered.

Why See It: Made at the height of his career, The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola’s classic won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

5. Pi (Watch Now)

The Plot: A paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.

Why See It: Genius director Darren Aronofsky(Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream)’s directorial debut, a cult film every geek should see.

6. Wargames (Watch Now)

The Plot: A young man finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III.

Why See It: Another geek movie that was very popular in the 1980s. Cyberthrillers may not have started with this film, but it was here the form achieved an early peak.

I liked both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Leo DiCaprio better as kids/teens than I do now. They seemed to really shine, now they’re A List and good, but they don’t seem to have the magic they did. Or maybe it’s the films. I watched Night Watch, I don’t see how it got to be so beloved. It was a chore for me to watch. I like my vampires gothic, this was just silly to me.
