unexpected plot twists

You’ve felt it: that mind-bending moment when the plot takes an unexpected turn, one that makes you go back and watch the movie again with a totally new perspective. While most movies coming out today have some sort of twist, there are some that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Here are ten of the most unexpected twists of all time.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

10. The Skeleton Key (2005)

The Story: Caroline is hired to provide in-home care for an elderly man and his wife (Ben and Violet) in a large, aging plantation house in Louisiana. While exploring the house, Caroline finds ties to hoodoo, a form of Afro-Caribbean witchcraft, and while she doesn’t believe in it, she knows Ben does, and she is afraid it is affecting his health. As she investigates further, she learns that hoodoo can’t harm people who don’t believe in it. A series of sinister events convince her that Ben’s life may be in danger, but they are unable to escape Violet, who is possessed by the spirit of a former servant of the plantation. In a final desperate attempt to protect herself, Caroline practices hoodoo to form a protective circle around herself.

The Twist: The “protective circle” is actually a trap, and by setting it up, she has proved that she believes in hoodoo.

9. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The Story: Andy Dufresne, a quiet, unassuming banker, is sentenced to two life terms in Shawshank prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. He maintains his innocence, in spite of overwhelming circumstantial evidence and enduring years of brutality and corruption in prison.

The Twist: There are two twists: Andy really is innocent, and he has been secretly planning his elaborate escape for years.
