The 10 Best British Movies Since 2000
High quality British films are becoming more and more prominent and some of the world’s finest actors are Brits. From hilarious satirical comedies to gritty thrillers, here is a selection of ten of the finest films to come out of British shores in recent times.
10. In The Loop (2009)
Armando Ianucci (creator of Alan Partridge) made a hugely entertaining satirical comedy with ‘In The Loop’, about what goes on behind the scenes of the UK and US governments. Both countries leaders are planning to wage war on the Middle East and when a British MP tells a radio show that ‘War is unforeseeable’ both governments begin their arguments for and against going to war.
You are introduced to some hilarious characters such as foul mouthed Head of UK Government Communications Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), who generally enjoys insulting people and the completely useless MP Simon Foster (Tom Hollander), who makes an uncanny habit of putting his foot in it at any opportunity. The film also shows the scurrying entourage of staff working for their political leaders and how they will do literally anything to ensure victory for their master, even leaking highly confidential information. If satire is your thing, this is not to be missed.
9. 28 Days Later (2002)
A handful of survivors face an entire population of zombies after a deadly virus that causes rage is released. Main character Jim (Cillian Murphy) has been in a car crash and wakes up from a coma in an abandoned hospital in London. He then precedes to wander the city’s deserted streets before he stumbles upon some more survivors. After joining forces with Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and his daughter Hannah the group head north after hearing a transmission from a base of fellow survivors. These survivors turn out to be members of the military but their efforts are futile against some of the infected and the remaining survivors face an epic battle to avoid infection.
This is a truly entertaining British horror movie with superb twists throughout. The infected can also run at full pelt, which adds to the fear.
