5 Best Movies Based On TV Shows

11 June 2013 | Features, Film Lists | by Christa McElligott

With all the free TV available streaming online, there’s no better time than now to get hooked on classic and new series alike. With compelling TV and movies online, you may wonder which form of entertainment you prefer — why not both? Your favorite TV shows have dozens or even hundreds of hours to tell their stories whereas movies only have your attention for two or three.

Still, sometimes movie adaptations of TV shows not only successfully capture the shows’ spirits, they’re incredible movies in their own right.

5. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Unless you’ve been neglecting the cinema for the past decade, you’ve probably heard of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy or even other Batman outings like the Tim Burton movies of the late ’80s and early ’90s. However, not as many people are familiar with the 1993 animated theatrical movie “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm,” which IGN suggests some fans believe to be the best Batman movie of all time.

“Mask of the Phantasm” is set in the universe of the acclaimed 1990s animated Batman TV series and, like the TV show, features the voice talents of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. Unlike the sometimes-kitschy ’80s and ’90s live-action Batman films, “Mask of the Phantasm” was the first Batman film to capture the gritty feeling of Gotham. Batman battles a villain hell-bent on eradicating the mob—which Batman’s no-killing ethics refuse to allow—and along the way stumbles on a woman from his past, with whom he gave up a chance at true love.
