20 Movie Characters That Are Hard To Hate

10 July 2013 | Features, Other Lists | by David Zou

likable movie characters

Without endearing characters, movies would be completely joyless entities. Luckily, we have characters of all shapes, sizes, races, morals, ethics, faiths, personalities, sexualities, and depth. And sometimes, we find ourselves hooked on a specific character or character type, a type that is impossible to hate, a type that we’d love to make friends with, a type that is too perfect to be true.

Here are our choices of 20 movie characters that you could never possibly hate.

20. Ferris Bueller

The Character: Teenage rebellion comes in many forms, but we prefer Ferris’s cheeky nose-thumbing to the knife-waving, shop-looting variety you see nowadays. His most appealing characteristic? His sheer love for life! As the man says, “life moves pretty fast… if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Most Endearing Moment: The shower scene sums up Ferris’ youthful exuberance perfectly. Admit it… you’ve all gone for a wet-look Mohawk at one time or another!

19. Buddy

The Character: Will Ferrell can occasionally be a little too abrasive for his own good, but in Elf he strikes exactly the right tone, playing the displaced Christmas helper with just the right blend of confusion, exuberance and wide-eyed innocence. He’s still quite loud, mind…

Most Endearing Moment: “SAAAAANTA! Oh my God! Santa, here? I know him. I know him!”

18. Ray Stantz

The Character: Sure, Venkman is the funny one, but when it comes to the most likable, Ray wins hands-down. He’s like an overgrown child in his enthusiasm for ghost-hunting! At least he is in theory… when he’s actually confronted with a real spook he practically soils himself.

Most Endearing Moment: His plaintive explanation of why he thought of the Stay-Puft marshmallow man. “I tried to think of the most harmless thing…”

17. Bill & Ted

The Characters: The lovably boneheaded rockers might not be the sharpest tools in the box, but their hearts are in the right place, and they know their way around a guitar lick. Plus, if we were mates with them, we’d have access to time travel. Which would be, y’know, radical.

Most Endearing Moment: Challenging Death to a game of Battleships. Good call, boys. Good call.

Sorry, but Ferris Bueller is a dick. I’m okay with the rest of ‘em.

I agree, instead put in Forrest Gump. How can anybody dislike him?

Оne thing is really lacking from this article…
    …FILM NAMES!!!
I mean, this article is about 20 MOVIE characters, and yet, you failed to say from which movie are they from!
And don’t give me that: ”Those are all cult characters, you MUST know them”, because saying a thing like that would be bullsh*t.

The real question is, why would you want to hate these characters? They
are not unlikeable to begin with. In spite of his acts, Patrick
Bateman is difficult to hate. Darth Vader is difficult to hate. Norman
Bates is difficult to hate. Marty Mcfly is awesome as is Josh Baskin
and the Genie. It’s just a misguided and pointless article.

i’m probably alone on this, but i can’t stand Buddy. I know he has good intentions and all that, but he annoys the hell out of me.
